Excercise Plan for Golf?
So, golf season is starting in the north east and I am on a new diet trying to loose a few pounds before the summer. So what good exercises should I be doing to help my golf game? I want to increase my swing speed and need to improve my shoulder turn on my back swing. Any ideas?
Ideally, you should have been doing exercises through the winter to prepare…it takes time to build the muscles up that you will need to improve Your Golf Swing. However, doing something is better than nothing.
The primary movement in the golf swing is rotating your upper body back, then rotating it through to the finish. That is why it is critical you implement exercises that involve rotational strength and flexibility. Your power comes from your core. Just like in any other sport, your core is the engine to the swing. Do exercises that will strengthen your core as well as stretching it.
For stretching, do twists, keeping one hand on your hip for stability, strech the opposite direction and hold for several seconds…do this repeated throughout the day to increase flexibility in the core area, try to rotate farther each time you do it.
As for strengthening your core…you don’t need fancy equipment…just grab anything in your home or office that you can hold in your hands. While sitting or standing, extend your arms straight out in front of you and while looking straight ahead, rotate with your arms as far as you can to the right holding this object. Now rotate to the left. Do this a total of 20 times. You’ll notice you will be able to rotate farther and farther after each rotation! If you want equipment…I have found weighted kettleballs to be helpful.
Also, if using the kettleball…swing it across your body as if performing a golf swing…and do it in the reverse direction as well. This will have you swinging a heavier weight than your club…and when it comes time to hit that little white ball off the tee…you’ll be amazed at how much power you have built up!
